Chapter 8 - The Forgotten Deed

The words hung in the air, echoing over the soft holiday music.
I stared at Mara, my mind completely blank. “I have no idea what property you are talking about.”
Matthias lunged forward, grabbing Mara’s forearm. “Shut your mouth! You are violating a non-disclosure agreement!”
“Don't touch me,” Mara warned, her voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register.
Daniel, my attorney, suddenly materialized from the crowd. He had been waiting in the wings. He smoothly inserted himself between Matthias and Mara, forcing my husband to step back.
“Assaulting a whistleblower in a room full of your investors is poor strategy, Matthias,” Daniel advised coldly.
Mara placed the folded document directly into my hands.
“Read the title deed, Evelyn,” Mara instructed.
I unfolded the heavy parchment. My hands trembled as I scanned the legal jargon. It was a property deed for a massive, abandoned industrial tract on the edge of the city—the exact land the Hensley Development project was slated to acquire and demolish.
But the name listed as the sole proprietor was not Hensley Development. It wasn't the Dre family estate.
It was my maiden name. Evelyn Rose Miller.
I looked up, completely stunned. “How is this possible? I’ve never seen this before.”
“Your late grandfather purchased this tract thirty years ago under a blind trust,” Mara explained, her eyes filled with sympathetic sorrow. “When he passed, the trust transferred directly to you. But because the land was considered worthless industrial runoff, the executors buried the paperwork. Matthias discovered it a year before he married you.”

The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow.
Matthias hadn't bumped into me by accident at that charity gala four years ago. He had sought me out. Our entire relationship, our marriage, the child currently kicking in my womb—it was all a calculated, monstrous acquisition.
