Chapter 19 - The Final Stand

I didn't flinch at the sight of the gun. The pain radiating from my abdomen was grounding me in reality.
“If you shoot me, Matthias,” I said loudly, ensuring the hidden wire Daniel had placed in my coat picked up every word, “how will you explain my body on your construction site?”
“It will be a tragic accident,” Matthias replied smoothly, closing the distance until he was five feet away. “A pregnant woman, distraught over her husband’s infidelity, wanders into an unstable industrial zone. A terrible fall. A structural collapse. The police will eat it up, especially after I cry at your funeral.”
He raised the weapon, pointing it directly at my chest.
“You really don't care about anyone but yourself,” I whispered, stalling for time. “You were going to poison those families in the red circles. You were going to kill your own child.”
“Collateral losses,” Matthias shrugged, his eyes devoid of humanity. “Acceptable parameters for building a legacy. Hand over the folder, Evelyn.”
“No.”
Matthias’s jaw tightened. He cocked the hammer of the gun.
Suddenly, the blinding glare of a police helicopter spotlight snapped on from above, completely illuminating the clearing in harsh white light.
“FBI! DROP THE WEAPON!” a voice roared through a megaphone.
Sirens wailed in the distance, instantly surrounding the property. Heavily armed tactical agents poured through the rusted gates, laser sights dancing across Matthias’s chest.
Matthias froze, the absolute shock registering on his face as he realized he had walked directly into a federal trap. He looked at me, pure, unadulterated hatred burning in his eyes.
“You set me up,” he hissed.

“I didn't just set you up,” I said, stepping backward as the agents closed in. “I recorded you confessing to attempted murder and environmental terrorism. It’s over, Matthias.”
With a scream of frustrated rage, Matthias dropped the gun into the snow, raising his hands in defeat.
