Chapter 13 - The Safehouse

|

We didn't go back to my house. Daniel drove us directly to a nondescript, heavily secured corporate apartment owned by his law firm in the heart of downtown.

Once the deadbolts were thrown, I collapsed onto the modern gray sofa, wrapping my arms protectively around my pregnant belly. The physical toll of the night, combined with the catastrophic destruction of my entire reality, finally caught up to me. I couldn't stop shivering.

Mara walked into the kitchen and returned with a glass of water, pressing it into my hands.

“Drink,” she commanded softly. “You need to stay hydrated. The stress isn't good for the baby.”

“He married me for a toxic wasteland,” I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. “He didn't want me. He didn't want this child. He just wanted the title deed.”

“He is a sociopath, Evelyn,” Daniel said, pulling a laptop from his briefcase and setting it on the coffee table. “But right now, we have to treat him like a hostile corporate entity. We need to lock down that property legally before he attempts to execute a forced transfer.”

“Can he do that?” I asked, panic flaring again.

“He already tried,” Mara stated, pulling a secondary file from her leather portfolio. “Three days ago, Matthias submitted a waiver of spousal consent to the zoning board, claiming you were medically incapacitated and unable to manage your assets. He submitted a forged signature from a private physician.”

The sheer, calculated depth of his evil was staggering. He wasn't just planning to steal the land; he was laying the groundwork to have me declared mentally unfit.

Suddenly, my cell phone, which I had silenced during the party, began to vibrate violently on the coffee table.

The caller ID flashed a name I never expected to see.
