Chapter 10 - The Acceptable Parameters

Mara pulled a second document from her portfolio. It was a geological survey report, stamped with a bright red CLASSIFIED warning.
“The Hensley tract isn't just abandoned factories,” Mara explained, holding the paper up so Daniel and I could see it. “Thirty years ago, it was a dumping ground for highly toxic chemical byproducts. The soil is completely saturated with carcinogens. If anyone disturbs that earth, it will contaminate the groundwater for the entire surrounding residential district.”
My stomach churned violently. “The red circles on the map.”
“Yes,” Mara nodded grimly. “The six residential neighborhoods bordering the property line. Matthias’s demolition plan bypasses every environmental regulation in the state. He bribed the zoning board to approve an immediate, explosive demolition to build a luxury commercial center.”
“If he sets off those explosives,” Daniel realized, his face turning an ashen gray, “the dust cloud alone will poison hundreds of families.”
“Collateral losses within acceptable parameters,” I quoted the chilling document I had read in Daniel’s office, the horror finally clicking fully into place.
I turned slowly back to my husband.
“You were going to poison children,” I said, my voice barely a whisper. “You were going to kill families, Matthias, and because my name is secretly on the deed, I would take the legal fall when the EPA inevitably investigated.”
Matthias finally dropped the facade. The charming, loving husband completely evaporated.
“It’s millions of dollars, Evelyn,” Matthias stated, his voice flat, cold, and entirely devoid of human empathy. “Those people live in squalor anyway. The commercial center would generate generational wealth. You are standing in the way of progress over a patch of dirt and some sick kids.”

Before I could raise my hand to slap the absolute monster standing in front of me, a deep, booming voice echoed across the ballroom.
“That is quite enough.”
