Chapter 4 - The Forbidden Strike

|

Dario’s palm whistled through the air toward her cheek.

To a normal person, the blow was too fast to dodge. To Wren Calloway, who had spent her childhood dodging steel blades in dark Sicilian training halls, the arm moved in agonizing slow motion.

She didn't duck. She didn't scream.

Wren shifted her head three inches to the left, letting his palm brush harmlessly past her hair. Before Dario could process the miss, her hand shot out from under her apron like a striking viper.

She didn't throw a fist. She extended her middle and index fingers, driving them with terrifying force into the nerve cluster located precisely two inches beneath Dario’s collarbone—the Viper's Talon, an ancient strike designed by Sicilian assassins to collapse an opponent's nervous system without leaving an obvious external mark.

THUMP.

The sound was low and dull, like a heavy bag hitting wet soil.

Dario’s eyes rolled back into his head instantly. His mouth opened in a silent gasp for air as his legs completely turned to jelly. The air left his lungs in a ragged wheeze, and he collapsed toward the floor like a sack of wet flour.

Wren caught his heavy two-hundred-pound frame effortlessly with one arm, guiding his body down onto the plush carpet so his fall didn't make a sound.

She stepped over his limp form, her breathing completely even, her face an unreadable mask of ice.

She wiped her fingers against her apron, taking a deep breath to reset her heart rate. She needed to hide his body in the linen closet, grab her coat from the staff room, and vanish into the Long Island night before anyone found him.

"That move was outlawed by the Donati council twenty years ago," a deep, dark voice spoke from the shadows above.

Wren froze. Every nerve in her body went dead cold.
