Chapter 3 - The Capo's Revenge

Wren walked quickly down the quiet corridor of the East Wing, intending to take the rear service stairs straight back to the cellar.
She reached the dark junction near the linen closet when a heavy hand shot out from a recessed doorway, grabbing her by the upper arm and dragging her violently into the alcove.
Wren’s instincts shrieked at her to break his thumb and shatter his windpipe, but she suppressed the urge, letting herself be shoved roughly against the wood paneling.
Dario Bellini stood over her, his face flushed red with bourbon and lingering humiliation.
"Look who it is," Dario sneered, leaning his heavy frame into her space. His breath stank of scotch and expensive tobacco. "The little rat who ruined my trousers."
"Mr. Bellini," Wren said, keeping her tone flat and trembling. "Please. Mrs. Crane is waiting for me downstairs."
"Mrs. Crane doesn't own this house tonight, sweetie. I do," Dario growled, slamming his palm against the wall right beside her ear. "You made me look like an absolute fool in front of Ricci and the Senator downstairs. Do you have any idea how much money that mistake cost me in reputation?"
"I am sorry, sir. It was an accident."
"Accidents have consequences," Dario whispered viciously. He reached out with a thick, ring-adorned hand, gripping her jaw so tightly her skin bruised beneath his fingers. "Downstairs, you knelt in front of everyone. Up here, you're going to give me a proper apology."
Wren looked into his bloodshot eyes. She saw the cruel entitlement of a man who had spent his whole life taking whatever he wanted from people who couldn't fight back.
Beneath her apron, her old burn itch turned into a fiery roar.
"Let go of me, Mr. Bellini," Wren said softly. But this time, the meekness in her voice was completely gone. It was replaced by something cold, dead, and ancient.

Dario blinked, startled by the sudden shift in her tone. Then he let out a harsh laugh. "Or what, little maid? You gonna cry?"
He raised his free hand to strike her face.
