Chapter 6 - The Kolov Syndicate

Across the city, in a dimly lit, smoke-filled penthouse overlooking Brighton Beach, Alexei Kolov threw a crystal tumbler against the wall. It shattered into a hundred pieces, raining glass over the expensive Persian rug.
"He broke his arm?" Kolov roared, his thick Russian accent thickening with rage.
His lieutenant, Yuri, stood nervously near the door. "Yes, Boss. Castellano handled it personally in the alley. He sent the muscle back with a message. He said the southern ports belong to him, and if we touch another civilian, he will burn our operations to the ground."
Kolov paced the length of the room, his massive, heavily tattooed frame casting a terrifying shadow. He had assumed Dominic Castellano had grown soft. The Italian boss had spent five years hiding behind corporate lawyers and legitimate real estate development. The streets whispered that the lion had lost his teeth.
But the swift, brutal retaliation in the alley proved the rumors dangerously wrong.
"He is bluffing," Kolov spat, lighting a thick cigar. "He is trying to protect his public image. He won't risk a full-scale war over a maid. It was a calculated risk."
"He moved the girl's family," Yuri cautioned. "Our guys at the county hospital said private ambulances came and transferred her mother to a VIP facility. Castellano paid off their debts. He is protecting her, Boss."
Kolov stopped pacing. A dark, malicious smile spread across his face.
If Castellano was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to protect a simple housekeeper, it meant she wasn't just a maid. She was a vulnerability. A weakness in the armor of the most feared man in New York.
"We don't hit the ports," Kolov decided, blowing a thick cloud of smoke into the air. "We hit his legitimate businesses. Burn his supply lines. Make him bleed money. But keep eyes on the girl. If Castellano cares about her this much, she is the key to breaking him."

"And if he retaliates?" Yuri asked.
"Then we show him that the Bratva does not fear a man who plays in boardrooms," Kolov sneered. "Prepare the men. We go to war."
