Chapter 10 - The Fortress

|

The drive upstate took two hours. We rode in the back of a heavily armored SUV, surrounded by a convoy of unmarked black vehicles driven by my most lethal soldiers.

The Castellano estate in the Adirondacks wasn't just a vacation home; it was a modernized fortress. Nestled on five hundred acres of dense forest, the compound was surrounded by electrified fencing, thermal cameras, and biometric security checkpoints.

As we pulled through the massive iron gates, Emma pressed her face against the tinted glass, marveling at the sprawling stone mansion illuminated against the dark mountain sky.

When we walked through the front doors, the medical staff I had hired were waiting.

"Your family is settled in the west medical wing, Miss Carter," the head nurse smiled warmly. "They are resting comfortably."

Emma didn't wait for permission. She sprinted down the hallway, her boots echoing against the hardwood floors. I followed slowly behind her, watching from the doorway as she burst into the massive, sunlit suite converted into a hospital room.

Her mother, Sarah, was sitting up in a plush bed, looking better than she had in months, an IV delivering top-tier pain management. Her brother, Leo, was in his wheelchair by the window, playing a video game on a massive television.

"Emma!" Sarah cried out, holding her arms open.

Emma collapsed into her mother’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. The crushing weight of years of poverty, fear, and desperation finally broke, washing away in a flood of pure, unadulterated relief. She hugged her brother fiercely, kissing his forehead as he laughed.

I stood in the shadows of the hallway, watching the family reunite. I had spent my life accumulating wealth and power, believing they were the ultimate goals. But watching the profound joy on Emma’s face gave me a sense of peace I had never experienced.

Emma stepped out into the hallway, wiping her eyes. She saw me standing there in the dim light.

She didn't say a word. She walked straight toward me, wrapped her arms tightly around my waist, and buried her face in my chest.

"Thank you," she wept into my shirt. "Thank you for saving them."

May you like

I slowly wrapped my arms around her trembling shoulders, resting my chin on top of her head.

"I will always keep you safe," I vowed into the quiet hallway.
