Chapter 13 - The Midnight Conversation

|

I returned to the upstate estate just before dawn. The adrenaline of the interrogation had faded, leaving me with a heavy, dark exhaustion that settled deep into my bones. The blood on my hands was washed away, but the shadow of the violence always lingered.

I walked into the massive, darkened kitchen to pour a glass of water.

I wasn't alone.

Emma was sitting at the marble island, wrapped in a thick, oversized wool sweater, holding a mug of tea. She looked up as I entered, her dark eyes catching the pale moonlight streaming through the windows.

"You're awake," I noted quietly, keeping my distance, acutely aware of the darkness I had just brought back with me.

"I couldn't sleep," she admitted softly. "I heard the helicopter land. Where did you go?"

"I had to handle a leak in the organization," I said vaguely, pouring my water.

"You found out who told them where I was," she guessed, her intuition sharper than most of my lieutenants.

I stopped pouring, looking at her. "Yes. It was handled."

Emma didn't ask for details. She knew what kind of man I was, and she knew what "handled" meant in my world. But she didn't look at me with fear or disgust. She looked at me with a profound, quiet understanding.

"Why do you protect me so fiercely, Dominic?" she asked, her voice a fragile whisper in the large room. "I’m not a part of your empire. I’m not wealthy. I don't offer you strategic alliances."

I slowly walked over to the island, setting my glass down. I looked at the beautiful, resilient woman who had survived everything the world threw at her with her soul entirely intact.

"Because you are pure, Emma," I confessed, the raw, unprotected truth slipping out before I could stop it. "I live in a world built on greed, deception, and blood. Everyone wants something from me. But you... you just wanted to save your family. You are the only thing in my life that isn't corrupt. Protecting you is the only thing that makes me feel like I still have a soul."

The air between us grew incredibly heavy, thick with a magnetic, undeniable tension.

Emma stood up slowly. She didn't back away. She closed the distance between us, looking up into my eyes. She reached out, her small, soft hand gently resting against the hard line of my jaw.

"You are not a monster, Dominic," she whispered, her breath brushing against my lips.

I leaned in, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm. Our lips were inches apart, the overwhelming desire to kiss her threatening to break every rule of restraint I possessed.

Before we could close the gap, the encrypted phone in my pocket erupted with a shrill, demanding ring. The war had just interrupted the peace.
