Chapter 8: The Volcano's Eruption

Time moved slowly but surely. Month by month, Javier earned tiny "privileges" into his new family’s life.

First, it was Sunday afternoons in the park. Then, quiet dinners at a local restaurant. Eventually, he was allowed into the house on weekend mornings to help Mateo build complex LEGO sets.

The biggest milestone came on a crisp spring morning. Mateo’s school was hosting its annual Science Fair. It was the first time Javier was allowed to enter his son's school world under the title of "Dad."

Unlike the ruthless billionaire CEO he was in the boardroom, Javier was a nervous wreck. He arrived twenty minutes early, choosing a seat in the very back row of the auditorium so as not to overwhelm the boy, holding a camcorder with sweaty palms.

Mateo’s project was a clay volcano, powered by the classic baking soda and vinegar reaction. When it was his turn to present, Mateo looked terrified. He scanned the large room. His eyes found Elena smiling encouragingly in the front row, and then he looked further back.

In the final row, a tall man stood up. Javier raised a big thumbs-up high in the air, flashing a brilliant, overwhelmingly proud smile.

Mateo exhaled. A genuine, bright grin broke across his face. He confidently poured the vinegar into the crater. Red foam erupted everywhere, accompanied by the loud cheers of his classmates.

In the front row, Elena had to excuse herself. She hurried out into the hallway, leaning against a row of lockers, and covered her mouth as she sobbed.

They weren't tears of pain. They were tears of profound relief. She realized that from now on, the word "Dad" in her son's vocabulary was no longer an empty void or an open wound. It had become a pillar of strength.
