Chapter 4

Chapter 4: Evidence of Blood
Ignoring Laura's frantic pacing, Javier slowly walked toward Elena and Mateo. He carefully lowered himself to one knee so he was eye-level with the little boy. Mateo looked at him with profound caution and fear. Javier raised a trembling hand, wanting desperately to touch the boy's cheek, but he pulled it back. He knew he hadn't earned the right.
"Is... is he really..." Javier asked, his voice shaking.
Laura, still refusing to concede, crossed her arms and scoffed.
"This is ridiculous. Are you seriously going to believe this stray child is yours without a shred of proof? She probably slept with someone else and is trying to pin it on you!"
Javier shot up to his feet, his eyes burning with rage.
"I will throw you out of that window myself in a minute. Shut your mouth. I will order a test."
Elena calmly walked over to a small wooden table in the corner of the room. She opened her purse, pulled out a brown manila envelope, and extracted a crisp piece of paper.
"I already have one."
Laura’s eyes bulged in shock.
Elena handed the paper to Javier. Her tone was soft but carried the weight of a thousand mountains.
"I had it done two months ago. Not to blackmail you. Not to ask for a dime. I did it because Mateo is growing up. He started asking questions about his father, and I couldn't keep lying to my son, telling him I didn't know who you were."
Javier took the paper with violently shaking hands. It was a medical report from a highly prestigious private clinic.
Paternity DNA Analysis.
Probability of Paternity: 99.99%.
He read the line once. Then again. His vision blurred with hot tears.
The boy was his. His own flesh and blood. Eight birthday cakes he hadn't helped blow out. Eight first days of school he had missed. Eight years of not knowing what his son liked to eat, if he was afraid of the dark, or what song lulled him to sleep.
Javier pressed a hand over his mouth, a choked, broken sob tearing its way out of the powerful billionaire's throat.
Laura lunged forward, trying to snatch the paper.
"It's a forgery! She faked it!"
Javier violently swatted her hand away.
"Do not touch this."
"Javier, you're being insane!"
"GET OUT!"
The two words echoed off the walls like a thunderclap, permanently slamming the door on whatever life they had built together.
Elena reached into her purse again and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper.
"I didn't come here tonight to ruin your life. I came here... because Mateo received this."
Javier frowned through his tears, taking the wrinkled page. It was an anonymous letter, letters cut from magazines and glued together. The message was purely sinister: "If you keep asking your mother about your father, you will be taken away to an orphanage and never see her again."
Javier turned to Laura, a dark, murderous aura radiating from him.
"You again? You threatened an eight-year-old child?"
Laura went pale, stammering. "I... I didn't know the boy would open it! I sent it to Elena, so she would know to stay away..."

Elena gritted her teeth, a tear of pure fury escaping her eye.
"When I came home from work, I found my son hiding under his bed, shaking, clutching this letter and crying until he couldn't breathe! Are you even human?"
