Chapter 1: The Room of Cold Blue Light

The room was bathed in a cold, piercing blue light that spilled from the streetlamp outside the half-drawn curtains. The air felt incredibly thick, as if the night itself had crept through the cracks in the walls to suffocate the breathing of everyone present. The heavy oak door remained ajar, creaking faintly in the midnight draft.

Laura, stunning but sharp-edged in a blood-red evening gown, stood blocking the doorway. Her chest heaved with frantic breaths, one hand with its perfectly manicured nails still clutching Javier’s arm in a desperate attempt to drag him away.

But Javier stood frozen, his shoes rooted to the hardwood floor. His eyes were not on his beautiful fiancée; they were locked onto the far corner of the room.

There stood Elena. She wore a crumpled white dress, her face pale with exhaustion and a mother’s primal fear. One of her hands rested awkwardly but protectively on the shoulders of a little boy who was pressing himself against her leg. It was Mateo. The boy was crying silently. It wasn't the loud, demanding cry of a child throwing a tantrum; it was the quiet, heartbroken sobbing of a little boy who had accidentally heard too many of the cruel secrets of the adult world.

Javier stared at the boy, and time seemed to stop entirely.

Jet-black hair, slightly curled at the ends. Large, dark, tear-filled eyes. A trembling lower lip. And then, Javier’s heart skipped a terrifying beat as he noticed the undeniable details his mind hadn't been prepared to accept: the developing shape of the boy's jawline, a tiny mole tucked just behind his ear, and the nervous habit of biting down on his lower lip when frightened.

That gesture. It was the exact same thing Javier used to do when he was a child.

Laura’s shrill, desperate voice cut through the silence, shattering the tension.

"She’s lying!" Laura screamed, her grip tightening on his suit jacket. "Javier, look at me! This woman is trying to trick you!"

But Javier suddenly seemed deaf to the world. The ambient noise faded into a dull ring. He took a hesitant half-step forward, completely ignoring Laura’s pulling, his voice coming out as a gravelly, broken whisper:

"How... how old are you?"

Elena swallowed hard, her eyes filled with defensiveness and old pain. Her grip tightened on her son’s shoulder.

"Eight."

Javier felt as though all the oxygen had been violently sucked from his lungs. Eight years. The words felt like a physical blow, a dagger driven straight into the memories he had tried so hard to bury.
