Chapter 6

Chapter 6: Boundaries of Trust
That night, Javier didn't force them to stay at the mansion. He knew it would create an unbearable pressure. He didn't want to force a fake, instantaneous family reunion. He called his private driver to take them safely home, and discreetly assigned a security detail to watch Elena’s apartment building to ensure Laura couldn't try anything vindictive.
Before the sleek car pulled away, the back window rolled down. Javier’s instincts pulled him closer. Mateo’s face appeared, his bright eyes looking at the billionaire.
"Are you coming tomorrow?"
Javier looked at Elena, who was sitting next to her son. Her face was neutral, neither encouraging nor forbidding.
"Only if your mother says it's okay," Javier replied respectfully.
Mateo thought about it for a second, looking like a tiny judge delivering a verdict.
"You can come to the park. But you can't come inside my house yet."
Javier smiled, a profound gratitude washing over him.
"I think that is a very fair deal."
The next morning, the sun broke through the oak trees at the central park. Javier arrived wearing the most casual clothes he owned—a pair of jeans and a linen shirt. In his hands, he carried a canvas bag stuffed with thick dinosaur encyclopedias.
Elena sat on a park bench at a safe distance, a paper coffee cup in her hand. Her eyes never left the two of them. She watched like a protective lioness, ready to sprint forward if anything upset her cub.
Javier didn't rush. He didn't try to hug the boy. He didn't bring expensive remote-control cars or luxury video games to buy the child’s affection. He simply spread a large blanket on the grass, opened a book, and listened.

Mateo talked passionately about the Jurassic period, explaining the difference between a Velociraptor and a Deinonychus. When Javier purposely mispronounced a species, Mateo proudly corrected him.
For the first time in years of storms and hardship, Elena watched her son laugh freely with a man. And whether she wanted to admit it or not, she saw the undeniable, invisible thread of blood pulling them together.
