Emily instinctively wrapped both arms around her belly, protecting the child who had survived a monster's greed. Michael stood by his wife's side, finally anchoring himself to the family he had chosen, utterly disgusted by the sister he thought he knew.
Detective Miller closed his notebook with a definitive snap. "Victoria Reynolds, you are under arrest for attempted aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of an unborn child."
Later that evening, as the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminated the stone facade of the mansion, Victoria was led out in handcuffs. To leave the house, she had to walk down that very same grand staircase.
Emily stood at the top landing, looking down at her. She felt her baby move again—a strong, healthy kick against her palm.
