The Pistol Beneath Her Coat / Chapter 8 / 20

Chapter 8 - the fourth cross daughterRose Cross was alive.

Her biometric records had been active for twenty-six years inside private hospitals, identity-protection programs, and research facilities.

Eleanor turned toward David.

“You told me she died.”

“The doctors told both of us.”

Vanessa smiled.

“The doctors worked for your mother.”

Beatrice Cross believed one child should remain outside the visible family. A concealed heir could protect the archive if Eleanor, Vanessa, or future descendants became corrupted.

Rose was removed from the hospital and raised under rotating identities.

David discovered her existence shortly before his aircraft crash.

“Did you meet her?” Lily asked.

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t tell Mom?”

“I needed proof.”

“You had a living woman.”

“She refused contact.”

Rose had grown up inside the Aster system. She understood its hospitals, algorithms, and covert transport routes better than anyone.

She considered the Cross family unstable.

Especially Eleanor and Vanessa.

“She controls the contingency relocations,” David said.

“Where is she?” Eleanor asked.

“Unknown.”

The operating-theater screens activated.

A woman appeared.

She had Lily’s face, but her hair was shorter and a pale scar crossed one eyebrow.

“Hello, Mother.”

Eleanor gripped the terminal.

“Rose?”

“That is the name Aster gave me.”

“Who raised you?”

“People who changed whenever I learned to trust them.”

Lily stepped closer.

“You’re my sister.”

“We share an origin.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“It is the safest one.”

Rose explained that Aster’s decentralization was incomplete. The employee-patient trust now controlled company shares, but the medical-routing network remained centralized.

David wanted to transfer it to government oversight.

Vanessa wanted private control.

Eleanor wanted destruction.

Lily wanted evidence released to victims.

Each option carried danger.

Government agencies contained buyers already connected to Aster.

Private control preserved exploitation.

Destruction could interrupt legitimate treatment for thousands.

Full release could expose patients.

“What do you want?” Eleanor asked.

“To remove family authority permanently.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

“It requires deleting all founder identities.”

David looked at the screen.

“That would erase access to emergency systems.”

“For seventy-two hours.”

“People could die.”

“People already died while you preserved control.”

Rose’s voice remained calm.

She had learned morality through systems rather than family. She measured harm without hesitation.

Lily asked, “Why activate the confrontation tonight?”

“To gather every founder fragment.”

“You knew Vanessa would stab Mom.”

“Yes.”

“And you let it happen.”

“Yes.”

Lily’s face hardened.

“You’re not different from them.”

For the first time, Rose reacted.

Only slightly.

“You know nothing about me.”

“I know you used her body as a key.”

“You used your heel.”

The words struck.

Lily looked at Eleanor’s injured hand.

Rose continued.

“You all believe your reasons make your coercion unique.”

Vanessa laughed from the doorway.

“Now she sounds like a Cross.”

Eleanor faced the screen.

“No more tests.”

“You cannot refuse the decision.”

“I can refuse your method.”

Rose displayed live maps of hospitals connected to Aster.

The system required a vote before dawn.

David proposed regulated transfer.

Vanessa proposed private continuation.

Rose proposed temporary shutdown.

Eleanor rejected all three.

Lily asked, “What is the fourth option?”

“There is none.”

“Then create one.”

Rose’s expression became almost curious.

Lily proposed distributing control facility by facility. Each hospital’s verified patients, doctors, and independent advocates would govern its own records and routing. Emergency interoperability would remain, but no central authority could prioritize wealthy clients.

David said it would take months.

Lily replied, “Then we spend months.”

Vanessa called it chaos.

Eleanor answered, “Chaos is not worse than ownership.”

Rose remained silent.

Then she opened a hidden command panel.

A fourth option appeared.

DISTRIBUTED CONSENT NETWORK.

It had always existed.

Rose had wanted to see whether they would find it without being offered.

Lily stared at her.

“Another test.”

Rose said nothing.

The confirmation required all four Cross daughters.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

Lily.

May you like

Rose.

Vanessa refused.
