Chapter 17 - the daughter without a legal name

Lily’s face remained calm until the hospital refused to access her medical file.

The wound on her shoulder from the evidence-facility attack required stitches. The emergency physician entered her name and received an alert.

IDENTITY UNVERIFIED.

INSURANCE INVALID.

MEDICATION HISTORY SEALED.

Agent Brooks ordered the treatment under federal-witness authority.

The hospital still demanded a temporary identification number.

Mara placed her own disputed document on the counter.

“Use mine.”

Lily looked at her.

“That could damage your claim.”

“Our records already occupy the same number.”

The physician registered Lily as Mara North.

For the first time, the woman raised as a replacement gave Lily access to a life rather than taking one.

After the treatment, they returned to Cross Manor.

The twenty-six heirs occupied the dining room and library while independent advocates reviewed their legal needs. Some called former guardians. Others refused all contact.

Daniel slept beneath a blanket near the stopped clock.

He was still a child despite the pistol, the founder profile, and the documents calling him David Cross.

Eleanor watched Lily study the suspension order.

“We will restore your records.”

“How?”

“Hospital originals. School files. witnesses.”

“Most of them were connected to Aster.”

“Then we prove the connection.”

“And if the court decides Mara’s certificate is stronger?”

Mara stood in the doorway.

“Then I testify that I am not you.”

Lily looked at her.

“What if they decide I am not me?”

Mara sat across from her.

“I spent my whole life hearing that identity comes from records. You spent yours believing it came from family. Both systems failed.”

“What remains?”

“Choice. Memory. consequence.”

Vanessa entered under federal guard.

Her trial court had authorized temporary participation because the succession crisis affected thousands of patients.

She placed an old wooden box on the table.

“This belonged to Mother.”

Inside were twenty-seven birth bracelets.

Not twenty-six.

Not one for each contingency heir.

Twenty-seven.

One bracelet carried Lily’s name.

Another carried Mara’s assigned number.

The final bracelet was blank.

David examined the serial numbers.

“They came from the private maternity wing.”

Vanessa looked at Eleanor.

“Our mother once told me a successful contingency could never know it was the contingency.”

“Which one of us?” Eleanor asked.

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa had stolen the box years earlier while searching for leverage against Beatrice. She believed it contained evidence of Rose.

She never counted the bracelets carefully.

Rose connected remotely from the council chamber.

“The archive lists twenty-six heirs because the first subject became part of the visible family.”

Lily looked toward Mara.

“Me?”

“Possibly.”

Eleanor felt the room narrow.

Aster might have suspended Lily’s identity not because Beatrice fabricated it.

It might have recognized that Lily’s original record belonged inside the hidden program.

David opened a sealed file connected to the blank bracelet.

The file required two blood authorizations.

Eleanor.

Vanessa.

The sisters placed their hands on separate readers.

The document opened.

PROJECT FIRST DAUGHTER.

Birth mother: withheld.

Legal mother: Eleanor Cross.

Eleanor stepped backward.

“I gave birth to Lily.”

David looked at the medical coding.

“The file may not refer to Lily.”

The project began two years before Lily’s birth and continued for six years afterward.

Several infants were placed into observation families.

The child attached to the blank bracelet had been transferred to Cross Manor at the age of three months.

Eleanor remembered no additional baby.

Vanessa did.

“There was a nurse’s daughter.”

“What?”

“Mother brought a nurse to the estate after you became pregnant. The woman had an infant. She stayed in the west wing for several months.”

“What was her name?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Anna Hale.”

Mara stood.

“One of my guardians used that name.”

Rose searched the concealed-heir records.

Anna Hale appeared under twelve different identities.

Physician.

Guardian.

Archive trustee.

Beatrice Four.

The woman who escaped from the evidence facility.

She had not merely trained Mara.

She had lived inside Cross Manor before Lily was born.

Brooks received a call from the federal hospital holding David.

Anna Hale had entered using a medical transfer order.

She did not take David.

She removed his stored blood samples.

Then she sent a message to Cross Manor.

The video showed Anna inside a laboratory. Behind her stood a transparent medical cradle.

Empty.

“You are searching for the first contingency daughter,” she said. “You are still assuming she is one of the young women.”

Eleanor looked toward Vanessa.

Anna continued.

“Beatrice Cross did not begin by replacing grandchildren.”

A childhood photograph appeared on-screen.

Eleanor and Vanessa stood beside their mother.

A third girl had been cut from the edge.

“The first successful replacement occurred one generation earlier.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Eleanor stared at the missing child’s hand.

It rested on her mother’s shoulder.

Anna Hale smiled.

“One of the Cross sisters was never a Cross sister.”
