The Pistol Beneath Her Coat / Chapter 5 / 20

Chapter 5 - three minutes before the archive openedVanessa ordered Dane to restrain Lily.

Two men moved forward.

Eleanor dropped the pistol.

The men relaxed.

Then she kicked it across the rug toward her daughter.

Lily caught it beneath her heel, dropped to one knee, and grabbed it before Dane could react.

She fired at the chandelier.

Glass and darkness fell together.

The room erupted.

Eleanor rolled behind the sofa.

Lily fired twice toward the floor, forcing the tactical men away from Vanessa.

Someone shot back.

A bullet struck the fireplace.

Another tore through Eleanor’s coat.

The antique clock continued ticking inside the darkness.

11:58.

Emergency lights activated along the baseboards.

Vanessa ran toward the transfer papers.

Eleanor reached them first.

Her blood had soaked the signature line.

Vanessa grabbed her injured side and squeezed.

Pain blinded Eleanor.

“Sign!”

Lily struck Dane with the pistol grip and rushed toward them.

One security man caught her from behind.

Vanessa forced the pen into Eleanor’s hand.

“Your daughter dies first.”

Eleanor looked across the room.

Lily struggled beneath the man’s arm.

Dane raised his weapon toward her head.

The clock moved to 11:59.

Eleanor placed the pen against the paper.

Vanessa smiled.

Then Eleanor drew a line through her own name.

The document became visibly altered.

“You stupid—”

The first midnight chime began.

Vanessa lunged for a clean copy.

Lily drove her heel backward into the security man’s knee and broke free.

Dane fired.

Eleanor turned.

The bullet struck the sofa.

Lily shot Dane in the shoulder.

He fell against the drinks cabinet.

Second chime.

The mansion’s exterior alarms activated.

Third chime.

Every locked door released.

Fourth chime.

Real federal agents entered through the servants’ corridor.

Agent Brooks led them.

Fifth chime.

Vanessa seized Lily by the hair and placed the knife at her throat.

“Back away!”

The agents stopped.

Eleanor lifted the pistol from the rug.

Her hand trembled.

Sixth chime.

“You won’t shoot me,” Vanessa said.

“No.”

Eleanor aimed at the chandelier chain above her.

Seventh chime.

She fired.

The remaining metal frame crashed between Vanessa and Lily.

Lily dropped.

Vanessa lost the knife.

Eighth chime.

Brooks’s agents tackled Dane’s men.

Ninth chime.

Vanessa crawled toward the transfer papers.

Tenth chime.

The Founders’ Archive activated beneath the mansion.

A deep mechanical vibration moved through the floor.

Eleventh chime.

Eleanor’s shares left her personal ownership.

Twelfth chime.

The wall screen illuminated.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

CONTROL DISTRIBUTED TO CROSS AEGIS EMPLOYEE-PATIENT TRUST.

Vanessa stopped moving.

She had lost the shares.

She looked at Eleanor with hatred so calm it became frightening.

“You think this ends Aster?”

Brooks placed her in handcuffs.

“It ends your access.”

Vanessa smiled.

“No. It ends hers.”

The screen changed.

The archive began opening automatically under its new trustees.

Lists of patients, facilities, and buyers appeared.

Then a warning filled the display.

ASTER CONTINGENCY ACTIVE.

AUTHORIZED PATIENT RELOCATIONS IN PROGRESS.

Brooks checked his radio.

Federal teams reported simultaneous evacuations at twelve private medical facilities.

Patients were being moved before warrants arrived.

Someone had activated the contingency minutes before midnight.

“Who?” Lily asked.

Vanessa looked toward Deputy Director Dane.

He lay wounded but conscious.

Dane laughed.

“I didn’t.”

The mantel camera turned by itself.

Its lens focused on Eleanor.

A synthesized voice spoke through the room.

“Founder heir confirmed.”

Eleanor stared.

The Aster system had recognized her biometric pattern through the pistol and blood on the papers.

Vanessa had not needed Eleanor’s signature to gain control.

She needed Eleanor physically present when the archive opened.

The entire confrontation had been designed to place her blood, voice, and handprint beside the root terminal at midnight.

Eleanor looked at her sister.

“You used me as the key.”

May you like

Vanessa’s smile widened.

“Mother always said you opened every door eventually.”
