The Pistol Beneath Her Coat / Chapter 4 / 20

Chapter 4 - the safety beneath her thumb“Take your hand out,” Vanessa repeated.

Eleanor felt the pistol’s safety beneath her thumb.

One movement would activate the signal.

But Lily’s second handgun remained aimed at her chest.

Vanessa watched both women.

The slightest mistake would expose them.

Eleanor removed her hand from the coat slowly.

Empty.

Vanessa relaxed.

“Good.”

She pushed the transfer papers closer.

“Sign.”

Eleanor looked at the first page.

The document transferred her shares to Vanessa.

The second gave Vanessa medical authority over Eleanor.

The third declared Lily sole successor.

It appeared to reward both aunt and niece.

In reality, a hidden provision dissolved Lily’s rights if Eleanor died within thirty days.

Vanessa intended to remove both of them.

“You promised Lily control,” Eleanor said.

“She will have everything she deserves.”

“That sentence means nothing.”

Lily’s weapon remained steady.

Vanessa smiled at her.

“Your mother still thinks she can save you.”

Lily replied coldly, “She never saved anyone.”

The words cut.

Then she shifted her right foot one inch.

Her heel pointed toward the fireplace.

Eleanor followed the direction.

A small security camera rested inside the carved mantel.

Its indicator light was dark.

Vanessa believed the system was disabled.

But the camera’s copper cable ran through the same emergency network as the pistol.

The signal would not only call agents.

It would restore the internal recording system.

Eleanor looked at the clock.

11:56.

She placed her bloody hand on the papers.

“I need the pen.”

Vanessa handed it to her.

Eleanor dropped it deliberately.

It rolled beneath the edge of her coat.

She reached down.

Her fingers closed around the pistol.

Vanessa saw the movement.

“Stop.”

Eleanor drew the gun.

Lily swung her weapon toward Vanessa.

Both safeties released almost simultaneously.

A sharp electrical click moved through the walls.

The mantel camera flashed red.

Vanessa stepped backward.

Lily shouted, “Federal agents are outside. Drop the knife.”

Vanessa stared at her niece.

Then she laughed.

“So this was the performance.”

“Yes.”

“You pressed your heel into her hand.”

“I protected the bones.”

“You kicked her.”

“I kicked the rug.”

“You called her weak.”

Lily’s voice broke for the first time.

“I needed you to believe me.”

Vanessa looked toward Eleanor.

“And you did?”

Eleanor kept the pistol aimed at her sister.

“I believed my daughter.”

“After she betrayed you for six months?”

“Especially then.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

She reached toward her jacket.

Lily fired into the ceiling.

“Hands visible!”

Dust fell from the plaster.

The shot activated the pistol’s second function.

Every audio file stored during Lily’s undercover work began transmitting through the estate alarm lines.

Outside, Agent Brooks received six months of evidence in a single encrypted burst.

But the front doors did not open.

No agents entered.

Vanessa smiled.

“You trusted the wrong federal team.”

A voice came through Lily’s concealed earpiece.

Not Brooks.

A man said, “Stand down, Ms. Cross.”

Lily pulled the earpiece free.

Vanessa had compromised the channel.

Heavy footsteps approached from the corridor.

Four men in dark tactical suits entered with weapons raised.

Their vests carried federal insignia.

Eleanor recognized none of them.

Vanessa moved behind the nearest man.

“Arrest my niece and sister.”

Lily looked at the badges.

“They’re fake.”

The lead man smiled.

“No. The badges are real.”

He was Deputy Director Malcolm Dane, one of the officials assigned to oversee the medical-trafficking investigation.

Vanessa had shown Lily his name inside the Aster records.

Dane was not protecting the network.

He was buying from it.

The clock showed 11:57.

Three minutes.

Eleanor and Lily stood back-to-back.

Four armed men surrounded them.

Vanessa lifted the transfer papers.

“Sign, and Lily walks out alive.”

Eleanor’s wound pulsed beneath her ribs.

Her arm had begun to shake.

Lily whispered, “Don’t.”

Vanessa heard.

“Still choosing the trust over your daughter?”

Eleanor looked toward the antique clock.

“No.”

May you like

She lowered the pistol.

“I’m choosing what happens after midnight.”
