Chapter 9 - Helena Finally Apologizes Without Saying “But”Nearly two years later, Helena asked to write Bia a letter.
Ricardo rejected the first draft.
It said:
I’m sorry if you misunderstood what happened.
The second was worse.
I made mistakes because I loved your mother too much.
The third took months.
I did things your mother told me not to do. I canceled an appointment she wanted. I spoke for her when she wanted to speak for herself. I took her phone because I did not want other people hearing what she said about me. Those choices were wrong.
Ricardo read it twice.
No “but.”
He gave it to Bia’s therapist.
Bia chose to hear it.
She did not ask to see Helena afterward.
That came much later.
When they finally met in a supervised room, Helena cried before Bia did.
Bia asked:
“Did you make Mommy die?”
Helena looked toward the therapist.
Then answered carefully.
“I don’t know whether my choices changed what happened medically. I do know I should have helped her see every doctor she wanted.”
Bia frowned.
“So you don’t know?”
“No.”
It was the most honest answer Helena had ever given.
For years she filled uncertainty with authority.
Now she had to sit inside not knowing.
That became part of her consequence.
She could apologize.
Change.
Accept boundaries.

But she could never claim certainty about what earlier care might have changed.
Neither could anyone else.
