Chapter 13 - The Payout|

Julian was a former federal prosecutor who had left the Department of Justice to start a private crisis management firm. He was ruthless, brilliant, and most importantly, he owed Ricardo’s family a massive debt for saving his career a decade ago.

An hour later, a sleek black SUV pulled into the abandoned parking garage, its high beams blinding Ricardo and Vance.

Julian stepped out, wearing a sharp charcoal suit despite it being past midnight. He didn't carry a weapon, but the two massive security contractors flanking him certainly did.

“Get in the back,” Julian commanded, opening the rear door of the SUV.

Ricardo and a trembling Vance climbed inside. The interior smelled of expensive leather and stale coffee. Julian climbed into the front passenger seat and turned to look at them.

“You’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest, Rick,” Julian said, his eyes scanning the manila envelope in Ricardo’s hands. “My contacts at the DA’s office are saying Lucas just filed an emergency injunction. He’s claiming you’re suffering from a psychotic break and kidnapping his daughter.”

“He’s setting the stage to take Bia legally,” Ricardo said, gritting his teeth. “Did you look at the files I sent you from the SD card?”

“I did,” Julian nodded, his expression grim. “Vanguard Holdings. It’s brilliant, honestly. Lucas wasn't just embezzling hospital funds. He was taking out massive life insurance policies on terminally ill patients without their knowledge. When they died, Vanguard collected the payouts. Your sister found out, so he made sure she became one of the casualties.”

Vance buried his face in his hands, quietly sobbing in the backseat.

“I have the original toxicology report,” Ricardo said, holding up the envelope. “It proves homicide. Plus, the audio recording of Camila naming Lucas.”

“It’s enough for a federal RICO warrant,” Julian confirmed, tapping the dashboard. “But the feds move slow. A grand jury takes weeks to convene. We don't have weeks. Lucas’s legal team is moving for an emergency custody hearing tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. If you don't show up, he gets Bia by default.”

“And if I do show up?”

“He’ll have you arrested for the shooting at your apartment,” Julian said flatly. “His men planted a gun registered in your name at the scene. You’re being framed.”
