Chapter 1 - Mommy Didn’t Go AloneThe funeral chapel fell silent when six-year-old Bia pointed at her grandmother.
“Mommy didn’t go alone.”
Helena stepped forward immediately.
“She’s grieving. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Bia hugged her doll tighter.
Then she opened a small stitched pocket beneath its dress and pulled out a cell phone.
“Grandma hid this. Mommy recorded everything.”
Ricardo’s face changed.
Helena went pale.
He moved between her and Bia.
“Nobody touches that phone.”
Someone near the chapel entrance called police while Ricardo asked staff to keep the memorial room calm and prevent anyone from disturbing the casket area or the device.
Minutes later, officers entered.
Helena tried to leave.
They asked her to remain while they determined what had happened.
Bia stood beside Ricardo, trembling.
The phone was not playing a perfect confession.
Its screen was cracked.
Its battery was dead.
Nobody even knew yet whether anything useful remained on it.
But Helena’s reaction had done something the child’s words alone had not.
It made Ricardo remember the last conversation he had with his sister, Camila.
She had whispered, “If Mom tells you I was confused, don’t believe her.”
