Chapter 9 - The Keycard's Origin

Lena fell to her knees beside my bed, sobbing into the mattress.
"I wanted to tell you," she choked out, her fingers gripping the metal bedrail. "Every single day for two years, it has eaten me alive. But I knew Daniel was part of whatever syndicate Reed was protecting. If I told you the truth, Daniel would have killed you in your sleep."
I looked down at the blue keycard clutched in her hand. "Then what is that? Why do you have my father's corporate access card?"
Lena wiped her eyes, her medical training forcing a sliver of composure back into her voice. "Because I'm not entirely a coward, Caroline. When I was left alone in the morgue to sign the fake paperwork, I found this tucked inside your father's sock. They missed it when they searched his body. I took it, and I hid it. I’ve been waiting for the right moment to give it to you."
"A keycard to what?" I asked, my legal mind spinning, desperately trying to connect the dots. My father owned a massive logistics and shipping empire. There were hundreds of facilities.
"I don't know," Lena admitted. "But the serial number on the back doesn't match any standard corporate door. It’s an underground bunker code. Your father knew they were coming for him, Caroline. He hid something."
I closed my eyes, fighting a wave of extreme nausea. Trusting Lena felt like swallowing broken glass, but I had no choice. Daniel's parting words weren't just a taunt; they were a warning. The syndicate was cleaning house. They had killed Judge Reed to tie up loose ends, and I was the biggest loose end of them all.
"Get my clothes," I whispered, pushing through the agonizing pain to sit up.

"Caroline, you have third-degree burns! You'll go into shock!"
"If I stay in this bed, I'll go into a body bag. Get me out of here."
