Chapter 5 - The Footage Plays

|

Two plainclothes detectives entered the sterile room, their badges clipped to their belts. Daniel recovered his composure first, pulling on his invisible armor. He straightened his tailored jacket, instantly arranging his face into a mask of wounded, exhausted concern.

"This is completely absurd," Daniel told the officers, gesturing toward Lena. "My wife is confused. She’s heavily medicated on fentanyl. Whatever this doctor is claiming, it's a misunderstanding."

Lena didn't argue. She simply pulled a sleek black tablet from her medical coat pocket, placed it on my bedside table, and pressed play.

The high-definition, wide-angle view of our kitchen appeared on the screen. The audio was crystal clear. Vivian stood beside the Viking stove, gripping the cast-iron pot with oven mitts. Daniel was leaning casually against the marble island, watching me chop vegetables with my back turned.

Then, Daniel's voice filled the quiet hospital room.

"Do it now. She’ll sign anything after a few days in the burn ward."

The recording showed the oil flying through the air. It showed me screaming and collapsing. It showed Daniel wiping his shoes.

The video froze, locking every face in the room in place.

Vivian began crying instantly, her facade shattering. "He forced me! He told me we would lose the house if she didn't sign the final transfer!"

Daniel whipped around, his eyes blazing with fury. "Shut your mouth, you stupid old woman—"

The two detectives immediately stepped forward, separating them before Daniel could lunge at his own mother. The taller officer grabbed Daniel’s arm, twisting it firmly behind his back.

I stayed perfectly silent, watching my abuser finally lose his power, until the officer reached for his steel handcuffs.

"Wait," I whispered, my voice raspy. "There’s another recording."
