Lena didn't argue again. She knew as well as I did that Daniel’s high-priced defense lawyers were already moving. A man with his connections wouldn't stay in a holding cell for long; he would easily make bail by sunrise, and the hospital was a sitting duck.
Lena quickly wrapped my torso in a fresh, heavy layer of sterile gauze, securing it tight enough to let me move without tearing the blistered skin. She found a pair of oversized scrubs in the supply closet and carefully helped me pull the fabric over my arms. Every movement was pure agony, a sharp reminder of the monster I had married.
"We can't use the main elevators," Lena whispered, checking the hallway. "Daniel’s people might already have eyes on the lobby."
She swiped her medical badge on a restricted stairwell door. We bypassed the security cameras by taking the freight elevator down to the sub-basement, exiting through the laundry loading dock into the freezing night air.
Lena’s unassuming sedan was parked in the alleyway. I slid into the passenger seat, biting my lip hard enough to draw blood to keep from screaming as the seatbelt pressed against my raw shoulder.
"Where are we going?" Lena asked, her hands shaking on the steering wheel as she peeled out of the alley.

I looked at the blue keycard resting in my lap. The logo belonged to my father's company, but the magnetic strip was older, heavily encrypted. I had seen a similar card reader only once before, when my father took me to his private bank in downtown Chicago when I was sixteen.
"First National Secure Depository," I instructed, my voice cold and focused. "Daniel thinks he knows everything about my assets. It's time I show him what my father actually left me."
