Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

|

The moment my mother-in-law hurled a heavy iron pot of boiling oil across my back, she leaned down. The kitchen lights caught the terrifying, cold smile stretching across her face.

"Maybe next time dinner will be on the table before my son gets home," Vivian whispered, her voice dripping with sheer venom.

As I collapsed onto the polished hardwood of the kitchen floor, a scream tore through my throat—a raw, primal sound that echoed off the granite countertops. The agony was instant and blinding. It felt as though a thousand blazing needles were burying themselves deep into my skin, melting the fabric of my silk blouse directly into my flesh.

My husband, Daniel, stepped into the kitchen. He didn't rush to my side. He didn't grab a towel or call for an ambulance. Instead, he looked down at me with an expression of mild inconvenience. He carefully stepped over my writhing body, reached down to wipe a stray droplet of oil off his expensive Italian leather shoes with a napkin, and calmly walked to the sink to wash his hands.

He was already preparing the biggest lie of his life.

I lay there, my vision swimming with black spots, gasping for air that refused to fill my lungs. Neither of them had the slightest idea that the woman they thought they had finally broken into a subservient, terrified little housewife had spent nearly a decade destroying hardened criminals in federal court. I was a fraud attorney, and I had built a career entirely on dismantling men exactly like Daniel.

"Call 911," Daniel finally instructed his mother, his tone chillingly flat. "Tell them she slipped. Tell them she's clumsy. Sound panicked, Mother. Make it convincing."

As Vivian picked up the phone and began to fake a hysterical sob, I closed my eyes, letting the darkness take me. I had already gathered everything I needed to bury them both. Now, I just needed to survive the night.
