Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Fortress

The extraction was executed with military precision.
An hour later, a black, armored SUV idled outside Elena’s apartment building. Silas, a massive, scarred man in a tailored suit, stood by the door. He didn't speak. He simply nodded respectfully to Dominic, then to Elena.
Elena woke Noah, wrapping him tightly in a blanket. The six-year-old was confused and groggy, but he trusted his mother.
"We're going on an adventure, sweetie," Elena whispered, kissing his forehead as she carried him down the stairs.
They drove into the heart of the city, pulling into a private, subterranean garage beneath a towering glass skyscraper. Silas escorted them into a private elevator that required a biometric fingerprint scan from Dominic.
The elevator doors opened onto the top floor.
Elena gasped. The penthouse was a sprawling masterpiece of modern architecture. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Boston skyline. It was elegant, cold, and undeniably expensive.
"Welcome to the sanctuary," Dominic said, stepping out of the elevator.
Noah, fully awake now, squirmed out of Elena’s arms and stared at the massive living room in awe. "Whoa. Do you live here?" he asked, looking up at Dominic.
"I do now," Dominic smiled down at the boy. "And so do you. There's a room down the hall filled with video games and a very large television. Silas will show you."
Noah looked at his mother for permission. Elena nodded numbly.
As Silas led the boy away, Dominic turned to Elena. The harsh lines of his face softened slightly.
"You are safe here, Elena," he promised. "No one gets in this building without my authorization. The perimeter is guarded by highly trained professionals. You can sleep tonight."
"And what are you going to do?" Elena asked, wrapping her arms around herself, feeling entirely out of place in her cheap clothes amidst the luxury.
"I am going to finish a war," Dominic stated coldly.

He walked over to a sleek bar cart, pouring himself a glass of amber liquid.
"Marcus thinks he can steal my empire. Tomorrow, I am going to let him know exactly what it costs to cross me."
