Chapter 2 - The Ghost's Recovery

|

Over the next week, a strange, quiet routine developed in the darkness beneath the mansion.

Elena visited every evening, slipping through the broken back door like a phantom. She brought high-calorie food, clean water, and fresh bandages. She stole pain medication from the bottom shelf of a local pharmacy, leaving cash on the counter because she couldn't bring herself to be a thief, even for survival.

Dominic healed with an aggressive, terrifying speed.

He was no longer the broken, delirious man she had found in a pool of his own blood. The color had returned to his face, his jawline sharp and unforgiving. He began doing slow, agonizing push-ups against the concrete wall, forcing his damaged body to obey him.

He rarely spoke about his past, but he asked countless questions about hers.

"Why did you leave nursing school?" he asked one evening while she unpacked a container of hot chicken stew.

Elena hesitated, staring at the plastic spoon. "My husband, Derek. He didn't like me being away from home so much. He said my focus should be on him. Then, when I got pregnant with Noah, he told me we couldn't afford the tuition anyway."

Dominic took the container from her, his gray eyes narrowing slightly. "He controlled you."

"He loved me," Elena corrected automatically, an old reflex.

"Men who love you don't extinguish your potential, Elena," Dominic stated flatly, taking a bite of the stew. "They weaponize it. Where is he now?"

"He left," she said quietly, pulling her knees to her chest. "Two years ago. He cleared out our joint account and drove to Florida. Left me and Noah with an eviction notice and the clothes on our backs."

Dominic stopped eating. The silence in the basement felt heavier.

"You cleaned houses to survive," he noted.

"I did what I had to do to keep my son fed and safe," she fired back, a spark of defiance igniting in her chest. "I'm not ashamed of hard work."

"I am not judging your work," Dominic said softly. He looked at her, truly looked at her, in a way no man had in years. "I am judging the men who forced you to do it."

He set the container down and leaned forward.

"Tomorrow," Dominic said, his voice shifting back to the commanding tone of a CEO. "I am strong enough to move. You need to buy me a prepaid cell phone. A burner. And you need to rent a cheap motel room on the north side of the city under a fake name."

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. "You're leaving the basement?"

"I am returning to the world, Elena," Dominic smiled, a cold, dangerous expression. "It's time to let Marcus know that dead men can still fight."
