Chapter 11 - The Sanctuary

|

When Dominic returned to the penthouse, the atmosphere had shifted from a tactical war room back to a sanctuary.

He found Elena in the living room, sitting on the plush sofa with Noah. The boy was excitedly demonstrating a new video game Silas had bought him, completely oblivious to the fact that his mother had just helped orchestrate a corporate coup.

Elena looked up as Dominic entered. The exhaustion on his face was evident, but the dark, murderous tension that had gripped him for the past week was gone.

"It's done?" Elena asked softly, standing up.

"It's done," Dominic confirmed, walking over to her. He didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a tight, desperate embrace. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the scent of her cheap shampoo that he had come to associate with absolute safety.

"You were incredible today," Dominic murmured against her ear. "You saved my life again, Elena."

Elena hugged him back, ignoring the voice in her head screaming that she was embracing a dangerous man. "I just caused a distraction."

"You caused an earthquake," Dominic corrected, pulling back slightly to look into her eyes. "Marcus is gone. The company is secure. You and Noah never have to look over your shoulders again."

He released her, though his eyes lingered on her face. "I promised you that you would never want for anything again. I have set up an irrevocable trust in Noah's name. Enough to pay for college, medical school, whatever he wants to do."

Elena’s breath hitched. "Dominic, I can't accept that. It's too much."

"It's not a negotiation," Dominic stated firmly. "And as for you... I have purchased the boutique floral shop downtown. I saw the gardening books in your apartment. I know you loved arranging flowers before your husband forced you to quit school. It's yours, Elena. Fully staffed, fully funded. You are the owner."

Tears spilled over Elena’s lashes. He hadn't just given her money; he had paid attention. He had seen the dreams she had buried to survive.

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered, overwhelmed.

"Because I want you to be free," Dominic said softly, his gray eyes filled with a profound, terrifying vulnerability. "And because I am hoping that if you are free... you might choose to stay here. With me."

Elena stared at the ruthless billionaire, the man who had ordered his own brother exiled, looking at her like she held his heart in her hands.

"You want us to stay?" she asked, her voice trembling.

"I spent my entire life building this fortress," Dominic confessed, looking around the massive, cold penthouse. "But it wasn't a home until you and your son walked into it. Stay with me, Elena. Let me take care of you. Let me show you what it feels like to be protected."

Elena looked at her son, laughing happily at the television. She looked at the man standing before her, who had crawled out of a bloody basement and handed her the world.

She took a step forward, closing the distance between them, and pressed her lips gently to his.

"I'll stay," Elena whispered against his mouth.

Dominic’s arms wrapped tightly around her waist, deepening the kiss, sealing a promise in the heights of the city that had begun in the darkest depths of a basement.

The ghost had returned to life, and he had finally found his queen.
