Chapter 15 - A Threat in the Rain|

Three weeks later, the rain returned to the city in heavy, relentless torrents.
Fay was leaving the medical center after visiting her mother, who was making remarkable progress thanks to the new treatment regimen. Escorted by Marco and two armed guards, she walked toward the waiting armored SUV in the hospital parking garage.
Suddenly, two black vans screeched around the corner, blocking the exit lanes.
Armed men wearing dark tactical gear poured out of the vehicles, guns raised.
"Get her in the car!" Marco yelled, pulling his weapon and shoving Fay behind his heavy frame.
Gunfire erupted instantly, echoing deafeningly through the concrete garage. The sharp crack of automatic weapons shattered the quiet afternoon.
Fay dropped to her knees behind the armored SUV, covering her ears as bullets whined off the reinforced glass and struck the concrete pillars around them.
Marco returned fire with lethal accuracy, dropping two attackers, but the sheer number of assailants was overwhelming.
"Fay! Stay down!" Marco shouted, reload his pistol in a flash.
Before Marco could maneuver around the rear bumper, a smoke grenade bounced under the SUV, releasing a thick, suffocating cloud of tear gas. Fay coughed violently, her eyes burning as her vision blurred completely.

Rough hands grabbed her from behind, pinning her arms against her back. A heavy velvet sack was pulled over her head, cutting off her light and air.
She fought wildly, kicking and screaming, but a hard blunt object struck the back of her head, sending her spiraling down into pitch-black darkness.
