Chapter 12 - The New Reality|

By the end of the week, Fay's life had completely transformed.

She was moved out of the cramped employee quarters in the basement and into a breathtaking master suite on the top floor, featuring panoramic views of the city skyline, plush velvet furnishings, and a walk-in closet filled with tailored designer clothing.

Her mother's oncologist had called her personally to inform her that a private medical trust had transferred half a million dollars to cover every stage of her mother's care, including a private room and top-tier specialists.

Yet, despite the luxury, Fay felt the gold bars of her new cage.

Her new role as Vincent's personal assistant meant she accompanied him everywhere. She sat beside him in tinted armored SUVs, took notes during high-stakes business meetings with syndicate lieutenants, and stood by his side during formal dinners.

The rest of the syndicate noticed the sudden shift immediately.

Whispers trailed behind her wherever she walked through the estate. The former maid who had gotten Capo Donovan erased was now sitting at the right hand of the boss.

On Friday evening, as they returned from a tense meeting at the docks, Vincent noticed her quiet demeanor in the backseat of the car.

"You're quiet tonight, Fay," Vincent remarked, leaning back against the leather seat and studying her profile.

"I'm just thinking," Fay replied, looking out the tinted window at the rain-slicked city streets.

"About?"

"About how everyone in your organization looks at me now," she said softly, turning to meet his dark gaze. "They don't see an assistant, Vincent. They see a target."

May you like

Vincent reached across the space between them, his large hand wrapping securely over hers.

"Let them look," Vincent whispered coldly. "They know what happened to the last man who mistook you for an easy target."
