Chapter 14 - The New Dawn

|

The sun rose over Lake Michigan, painting the morning sky in brilliant hues of gold and bruised purple. The storm had finally passed.

Dante and Elena stood on the balcony of his secure, secondary estate in the northern suburbs. The air was crisp and clean.

Inside the house, Evelyn Whitaker was being held under heavy guard. She would be quietly exiled to a remote property in Europe, stripped of her communication and her influence, never to see her daughter or the city of Chicago again. Arthur was already in federal custody, screaming for lawyers who refused to take his calls. Raymond Cole’s syndicate was systematically being dismantled by Silas’s men.

The war was decisively won.

Dante stood behind Elena on the balcony, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, resting his chin on her shoulder. They watched the sun crest over the water in comfortable, profound silence.

“You know,” Dante murmured, his voice a low, vibrating hum against her back. “I still have those torn divorce papers in my pocket.”

Elena turned around within his embrace, looping her arms around his neck. She looked up into his eyes, a radiant, genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time in three years.

“You can burn them,” Elena whispered, her dark eyes shining with absolute certainty. “I am never leaving you.”

Dante’s expression softened into something incredibly beautiful. The hardened mafia boss completely vanished, leaving only a man profoundly, irrevocably in love.

“We have a lot of lost time to make up for,” Dante promised, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to her lips.

“We have the rest of our lives,” Elena replied, kissing him back.

They stood together in the morning light, the invisible walls between them permanently destroyed. They had survived the assassination, dismantled the betrayal, and forged a bond written in blood and absolute trust.

But in the world they inhabited, absolute peace was always an illusion.

Inside the bedroom, Dante’s heavily encrypted, secure satellite phone began to ring. It wasn't a local number. It was an international frequency reserved exclusively for the High Commission—the shadowy, elite council of the oldest mafia families in the world.

Dante’s posture tensed slightly. He looked at the ringing phone, then back at his wife.

“Let it ring,” Elena said softly, her eyes fierce and uncompromising. “They can wait until tomorrow.”

Dante smiled, a dark, terrifying, beautiful expression. He pulled his wife closer, ignoring the ringing phone, ready to face whatever new monsters emerged from the shadows, knowing he finally had his queen standing firmly by his side.
