Chapter 10 - The Choice

|

Elena stepped out from behind Dante. She didn't lower her weapon. She aimed it directly at the man who had raised her.

“I didn't do my job, Dad,” Elena stated, her voice ringing clearly in the echoing garage. “I didn't give you his schedules. I didn't give you his security flaws. You are standing here tonight blind because I refused to be your spy.”

Arthur’s smug smile vanished. A flash of genuine, furious irritation crossed his face.

“You foolish girl,” Arthur spat, the paternal facade crumbling instantly. “You ruined three years of planning because you fell in love with a street thug in a custom suit? I gave you to him to secure my empire!”

“You sold me to a monster,” Elena countered, tears of rage springing to her eyes. “But the monster turned out to be the only man who actually protected me.”

Dante didn't take his eyes off the mercenaries, but the fierce, overwhelming pride he felt for his wife burned brighter than the spotlight.

“This is touching, truly,” a new, gravelly voice interrupted.

Raymond Cole stepped out from behind a black SUV. He was a brute of a man, scarred and heavily built, holding a customized submachine gun.

“But we are on a schedule, Arthur,” Cole sneered. “The police will be here in ten minutes. Kill them both and let’s get out of here.”

“Elena is my blood!” Arthur snapped at Cole. “She comes with me!”

“She just pointed a gun at your head, Arthur,” Cole laughed harshly. “She’s collateral damage. Kill them.”

The mercenaries raised their weapons, preparing to unleash a firing squad on the isolated couple.

Dante braced himself, ready to throw Elena behind a concrete pillar and take the brunt of the fire. But before a single trigger could be pulled, the screech of tires echoed violently through the subterranean garage.

Three massive, matte-black armored vans smashed through the heavy security gates at the far end of the garage, moving at terrifying speeds.

“Silas,” Dante whispered, a dark, victorious smile finally breaking across his face.

The heavy vans skidded into an aggressive, defensive formation between Dante and the mercenaries. The side doors flew open, and two dozen of Dante’s elite loyalists poured out, heavily armed and wearing tactical armor.

The odds had just shifted. The king of Chicago was no longer fighting alone.
