Chapter 13 - The Ashes

|

The garage was a scene of controlled chaos as Dante’s men cleared the bodies and secured the prisoners before the police finally breached the subterranean levels. Thanks to Dante’s extensive payroll within the city’s infrastructure, the official report would list the incident as a gang war shootout resulting in multiple arrests, entirely omitting the involvement of the Romano syndicate.

Dante and Elena were ushered into the back of an armored SUV. Silas took the wheel, driving them away from the wreckage and into the quiet, rain-slicked streets of Chicago.

The adrenaline crash hit Elena like a physical blow. She slumped back against the leather seat, her entire body shaking, the gun slipping from her numb fingers onto the floorboard.

Dante didn't hesitate. He pulled her fiercely into his arms, wrapping her in his heavy coat. He buried his face in her dark hair, inhaling deeply, his massive frame shuddering with the profound, overwhelming relief of survival.

“You are safe,” Dante murmured repeatedly against her temple. “It’s over. You are safe.”

Elena clung to him, burying her face in his chest, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heartbeat. The man she had been forced to marry, the man she had been forced to push away, was holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.

“I’m sorry,” Elena whispered, tears finally breaking through her stoic facade. “I’m so sorry I lied to you for three years. I just wanted to keep you alive.”

Dante pulled back slightly, gently framing her face with his large, calloused hands. His dark eyes were burning with an intensity that took her breath away.

“You sacrificed your own happiness to protect me,” Dante said, his voice thick with raw, unprotected emotion. “You fought beside me tonight like a queen defending her kingdom. You never have to apologize to me again, Elena. For anything.”

He leaned down and kissed her. It wasn't the tentative, cold kiss of a forced marriage. It was a deep, bruising, desperate claiming—a kiss forged in gunfire and absolute devotion. Elena kissed him back with equal ferocity, surrendering entirely to the love she had hidden for a thousand days.

When they finally broke apart, the city lights blurred past the tinted windows.

“Where are we going?” Elena asked softly, resting her head on his shoulder.

“Home,” Dante replied, his arm tightening securely around her waist. “We are going home.”
