Chapter 20 - The Threshold

Suddenly, a blinding spotlight slammed down onto the back gate, completely illuminating Leo and Sloan.
Leo shielded his eyes, turning around in panic.
Three heavily armed Caruso security guards stood on the balcony above them, their assault rifles aimed directly at the undercover agent.
The heavy metal side door of the garage slowly opened, and Fallon Caruso stepped out into the freezing courtyard. He was still wearing his tailored suit, though the cuffs were now stained with dark, fresh blood. He held his suppressed pistol loosely by his side.
“Agent Vance,” Fallon said loudly, his voice echoing in the cold night air. “I always knew you were a rat. I just didn't know you were brave enough to hold a gun to my assistant’s head on my own property.”
Leo panicked. He grabbed Sloan by the collar, dragging her in front of him as a human shield, pressing his gun tightly to her temple.
“Back off, Caruso!” Leo shouted desperately. “The FBI knows I’m here! If I die, they will raid this compound and tear it down to the studs!”
“Let them come,” Fallon said coldly. “I have nothing to hide anymore. The rat in my house is dead.”
Fallon locked eyes with Sloan. He didn't look angry at her. He looked almost impressed. He knew exactly what she had done with the letter. She had served him his revenge on a silver platter.
“Sloan,” Fallon said quietly, ignoring the screaming federal agent. “You can walk away right now. You can run into the dark, go back to your sick mother, and disappear forever. Or, you can step away from that coward, walk back inside my house, and help me run this city. Your choice.”
Leo’s hand was shaking violently against her head. The security guards tightened their grips on their rifles. Fallon waited patiently, offering her a throne built on blood and secrets.

Sloan took a deep breath, looking at the open gate leading to freedom, and the bloody mansion leading to absolute power.
Then, she slowly raised her hands, and made her choice.
