Chapter 19 - The Escape Plan

Chaos immediately erupted in the mansion. The security guards rushed the table, but Fallon waved them off, barking aggressive orders to lock down the entire estate and dispose of the body.
In the confusion, Sloan sprinted silently down the back hallway. She needed to get out right now. The police would be here eventually, or a mafia war would start in the front yard.
She burst through the kitchen doors and ran out into the freezing November night. She headed straight for the back security gate, the rendezvous point Leo had demanded.
Leo was waiting in the shadows near a black sedan, pacing furiously. When he saw her running toward him, his face lit up with greedy relief.
“You made it,” Leo hissed, grabbing her arm as she approached. “Where is it? Give me the ledger, Sloan! We have a raid team parked five miles away waiting for my signal!”
“I don't have it,” Sloan gasped, trying to pull away from his tight grip. “It’s still in the safe.”
Leo’s face instantly contorted with violent rage. He shoved her hard against the brick wall of the gate.
“What did you do?!” he screamed, his undercover persona completely shattering. “I told you to bring me the book! I need that book to make captain!”
“I gave Fallon something better,” Sloan sneered, finding her courage. “I gave him his wife’s letter. He just shot Dante in the dining room. The family is tearing itself apart. You don't need the book, Leo. The war has already started.”
Leo pulled his FBI-issued firearm and pointed it directly at her face.

“You stupid, arrogant girl,” he spat. “A dead underboss doesn't get me a promotion. I need the financial records! You’re going back inside right now, and you’re going to open that safe, or I swear to God, I’ll shoot you right here and say you were caught in the crossfire.”
Sloan stared down the dark barrel of the gun, realizing the FBI agent was just as corrupt and ruthless as the mafia boss.
