Chapter 14 - The Undercover Betrayal

“Perfect? Why is that perfect?” Sloan demanded, shoving Leo away from her in the cramped, dark closet. “Dante is dangerous! If he finds out what I know, I’m dead!”
Leo let out a short, cynical laugh. He reached into his canvas jacket and pulled something out, holding it up in the dim light.
It was a heavy, silver badge. FBI.
Sloan stared at it, her mind completely short-circuiting.
“You’re a fed,” she breathed out, horrified. “You aren't a handyman. You aren't trying to help me.”
“I’m Special Agent Leo Vance,” he said coldly, putting the badge away. “And I’ve been undercover in this family for two years trying to find Fallon’s black book. You found it in two months. I don't care about your mother, Sloan. I care about taking down the Caruso family.”
Sloan felt deeply, physically sick. She had trusted him. She had told him everything.
“The video,” Sloan said, her voice shaking with rage. “You leaked the video of me crawling just to cause a distraction. You used my humiliation for your case.”
“It worked, didn't it?” Leo sneered. “Listen to me carefully. Dante and Fallon are going to be having dinner tonight. They will be out of the study. You have access now. You are going to open that safe, get the ledger, and bring it to me by the back gate at 9 PM. If you don't, I will arrest you for conspiracy and money laundering, and your sick mother can die alone in that hospital.”
He opened the closet door, letting the bright hallway light spill in.
“Nine o'clock, Sloan. Don't be late.”

Leo slipped out into the hallway, leaving Sloan alone in the dark. She was completely trapped. If she didn't help the FBI, she went to prison. If Fallon caught her stealing the ledger, she would be murdered.
But as she stood there in the dark, a third, crazy option slowly formed in her mind. She wasn't going to be a pawn for the FBI, and she wasn't going to be a victim for the mafia. She was going to burn them all down together.
