Chapter 15 - Decrypting the Truth

|

Sloan walked back to her desk outside the study, her mind moving a million miles an hour.

She didn't just have a ledger; she had Isabella Caruso’s hidden letter. A letter that explicitly named Dante Moretti as a traitor and a murderer. If Leo got the ledger, he would just arrest everyone, and Fallon would never know the truth about his wife’s death. The betrayal would remain buried forever.

Sloan wanted something much more explosive. She wanted them to destroy each other.

At 6:00 PM, Fallon left the study to shower and change for dinner. Sloan knew she had exactly twenty minutes.

She slipped into the empty office, locked the heavy oak door from the inside, and went straight for the safe. She moved the painting, spun the dial—left, right, left, a combination she had secretly memorized by watching Fallon’s hand movements earlier that week.

Click.

She pulled the heavy steel door open and grabbed the black ledger. She flipped quickly to the back pages, pulling out the yellowed, folded letter from Isabella.

Sloan walked over to Fallon’s desk. She opened the folder containing tonight’s agenda—the papers Fallon and Dante were supposed to review together.

With shaking, sweaty hands, Sloan placed Isabella’s handwritten letter right on top of the financial documents. It was the very first thing Fallon would see when he opened the folder at the dinner table.

She closed the folder, straightening the edges perfectly.

She put the black ledger back into the safe, closed the heavy door, and locked it tight. Let the FBI try to find it now.

Sloan unlocked the study door and sat back at her desk just as Fallon walked down the hallway, wearing a crisp, dark suit, smelling of expensive cologne and impending violence.

“Are the documents ready?” Fallon asked, his voice low and serious.

“Yes, Boss,” Sloan said smoothly, handing him the folder. “Everything you need to see is right inside.”
