Chapter 18 - After the Storm

|

Before Dominic could turn back toward the hallway, a loud crash echoed from the upper balcony above the central atrium.

“Dominic!” a wild, crazed voice screamed from above.

Dominic pulled me behind the heavy titanium door of the safe room. “Stay here. Lock it from the inside.”

“Dominic, no!” I cried, pulling on his arm.

“I finish this now, Clara,” he said, his eyes burning with absolute resolve. He leaned down, catching my lips in a deep, fierce, possessive kiss that took my breath away entirely. “Lock the door.”

He stepped out into the hallway and forced the heavy vault door shut behind him.

Through the bulletproof glass observation window of the safe room, I watched the final confrontation unfold.

Vincent stood on the grand marble staircase, bleeding from a shoulder wound, holding a detonator switch in his trembling hand.

“You took everything from me, nephew!” Vincent shrieked, his face twisted in madness. “I built this syndicate with your father! You gave it to a child and a floor-scrubbing whore!”

Dominic walked down the corridor slowly, raising his weapon without a single trace of fear.

“You touched my wife,” Dominic said, his voice echoing like thunder across the marble. “You touched my son.”

BANG!

A single shot rang out.

Vincent dropped the detonator, his eyes wide in shock as he tumbled backward down the grand staircase, landing lifeless at the foot of the bronze horse statue where my journey in this house had begun.
