Chapter 7: The Chilling Verdict

It was Emma who delivered the fatal blow.

She did not cry. Her voice did not tremble. The burning red handprint on her cheek stood out starkly against her pale skin, a physical testament to her mother's desperate, violent betrayal.

She raised her hand, her finger pointing steadily, condemningly, at the pathetic figure of Daniel Ross.

"Tell him, Mom," Emma commanded, her voice echoing through the silent room with the cold, unyielding edge of a freshly sharpened blade. "Tell Dad exactly who he is."

Victoria sobbed, shaking her head frantically. "Richard... Richard, please..."

"I asked a question, Victoria," Richard said. The confusion in his eyes was rapidly burning away, replaced by the terrifying, dawning light of comprehension. "Speak to me."

"He... he is..." Victoria stuttered, unable to force the words past her lips.

"Look at him, Dad," Emma interrupted, refusing to let her mother spin a web of lies. "He’s here. Every single time you go out of town on a business trip, he stays here. In your house. In your bed."

The words hung in the air, a definitive death sentence for the Carter family.

Richard’s mind raced, processing the impossible reality. The puzzle pieces fell into place, cutting him to his very core. The extended business trips. The empty, lonely hotel rooms. The times he had rushed through airports, exhausted and stressed, just to get back to a wife who had been entertaining a boy half his age in the very bed they shared.

His eyes slowly drifted back to Victoria. The woman who had sworn vows to him, who had stood by him for over two decades. She was looking back at him, her lips parted, unable to form a single syllable of defense.
