Chapter 5: Ripping the Veil

Driven by a surge of pure, unadulterated adrenaline, Emma lunged past her mother toward the center of the room.

"Emma, stop it!" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward to grab her daughter's arm.

Emma violently shook her off. She grabbed two massive handfuls of the thick, expensive duvet and the heavy bed skirt.

With a guttural cry fueled by years of watching her father work himself to the bone for this family, Emma pulled backward with all her might.

The fabric ripped through the air with a sound like a cracking sail, tearing away the final, pathetic layer of deception.

The shadow was no longer invisible.

There, cowering pathetically beneath the expensive oak frame of the bed, was Daniel Ross. He was young—perhaps only a few years older than Emma herself—impossibly handsome, and thoroughly terrified. He was curled into a tight fetal position, his arms raised reflexively over his head to shield himself from the sudden, blinding exposure of the afternoon sun.

"Oh my god," Emma breathed out, the disgust rolling off her tongue like acid.

The young lover, who had brazenly occupied a house paid for by another man's sweat, now looked like nothing more than a frightened child. Daniel scrambled backward on his elbows, bumping his head hard against the bedframe. His eyes darted frantically around the room, searching for an escape that did not exist.

"Wait, please, it's not what it looks like!" Daniel stammered, holding his hands up defensively.

"Shut up!" Emma screamed at him, her voice cracking. "Don't you dare speak to me!"

May you like

Victoria collapsed onto her knees beside the bed, burying her face in her hands. "Emma, I can explain... I was so lonely..."

The room descended into a suffocating, frozen tension. The bomb had detonated, and the three of them were trapped in the immediate, ringing aftermath.
