Chapter 1: The Golden Veneer

The master bedroom of the Carter estate shimmered beneath the warm, golden embrace of the late afternoon sun. It was a sprawling space, meticulously designed by top-tier interior decorators to project an image of absolute perfection. Rays of amber light spilled across the pristine, high-thread-count white bedsheets, casting long, elegant shadows over the polished mahogany furniture and the tastefully painted beige walls. To an outsider, the room exuded an almost hypnotic serenity—a quiet, luxurious haven that bespoke wealth, stability, and unshakeable family harmony.

But houses, no matter how grand, often harbor the darkest of shadows in their brightest rooms.

Emma Carter, twenty years old and possessing a quiet, observant intelligence, stood in the grand hallway just outside the master suite. Her light summer dress fluttered slightly in the draft of the central air conditioning. Her long blonde hair caught the ambient light from the skylight above, framing a face that was usually serene but was currently etched with a deep, unsettling intuition.

For months, an invisible poison had been seeping into the foundation of her family's home. Whispers, unexplained absences, and the cold, hollow distance in her mother’s eyes had all pointed to a truth Emma had desperately tried to ignore.

Just ten minutes prior, Emma had spoken to Maria, the head housekeeper, in the kitchen.

"Is my mother upstairs, Maria?" Emma had asked, reaching for a glass of water.

"Yes, Miss Emma," the housekeeper had replied, keeping her eyes carefully fixed on the marble countertop she was wiping. "She gave strict orders not to be disturbed. She mentioned a terrible migraine."

"A migraine," Emma had repeated softly, the skepticism heavy in her voice. "Right."

Today, the silence of the house felt entirely different. It was heavy, expectant, and suffocating. Emma took a deep breath, completely unaware that by taking her next few steps, she was about to walk straight into a nightmare that had been meticulously concealed behind closed doors.
