Chapter 4: The Shadow Beneath

The sting on Emma’s face grounded her. The shock rapidly dissolved, replaced by a visceral, white-hot clarity.

She looked into her mother's eyes and saw no parental authority—only absolute, trembling fear. Victoria’s knuckles were stark white as she gripped the edge of a nearby mahogany dresser, trying to anchor herself.

"I asked you a question, Mom," Emma said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm octave. "Why are you so out of breath if you have a migraine?"

"I don't have to explain myself to a child," Victoria hissed, pointing a manicured finger toward the hallway. "Leave. Now."

Emma did not cry out. She did not apologize. Her eyes, blazing with an unfamiliar, terrifying fury, slowly scanned the room.

That was when she saw it.

The heavy, luxurious bed skirt—an expensive fabric designed to pool elegantly against the polished floor—was snagged. And beneath it, just barely visible in the dark shadows of the under-bed clearance, was the tip of a polished brown leather shoe.

Time seemed to slow to a painful crawl. The air in the room grew thick, heavy with the weight of the impending collapse. The puzzle pieces locked together in Emma's mind with a sickening crunch. The late-night phone calls. The sudden changes in Victoria's wardrobe. The way the house felt so incredibly guarded every time Richard packed his bags.

Emma’s gaze shifted from the shoe back to her mother's face.

Victoria followed her daughter's line of sight. When she realized what Emma was looking at, all the color violently drained from her face, leaving her as pale as a corpse.

"Emma... no..." Victoria whispered, her authoritative tone completely vanishing, replaced by a beggar's plea. "Please, sweetheart, don't..."

"Who is under the bed, Mom?" Emma asked, her voice shaking with rage.

"Nobody! It's just clutter, please, just look at me—"

But Emma was already moving.
