Chapter 9: The Final Severance

As Elena’s pregnancy progressed, the reality of bringing a child into the world forced Julian to make one final, difficult decision.

He drove to the outskirts of the city, pulling up to the modest, gray apartment complex where his mother now lived. He didn't bring Elena. This was a battle he had to fight alone.

He knocked on the thin wooden door.

Beatrice opened it. She was wearing a faded silk robe, her hair no longer perfectly coiffed, but the sharp, venomous glint in her eyes remained entirely intact.

"Julian," she said, feigning surprise. "To what do I owe this rare privilege? Did your wife finally give you permission to visit your ailing mother?"

Julian didn't rise to the bait. He didn't step inside the apartment.

"I am only here for five minutes, Mother," Julian said, his voice completely devoid of emotion. "I came to tell you that Elena is pregnant. We are expecting a baby in the spring."

Beatrice’s eyes widened. A sudden, greedy spark ignited in her gaze.

"An heir," Beatrice gasped, her hands flying to her chest. "My grandchild. Finally, the Vance bloodline continues. We must make arrangements for the nursery at the estate. I will need to select the nannies—"

"Stop."

Julian’s voice cracked like a whip in the quiet hallway.

Beatrice froze.

"This child is not an heir to an empire. This child is my son or daughter," Julian said, his posture rigid and unyielding. "I am telling you this because I want you to hear it from me, not from the society papers."

He looked at the woman who had terrorized his childhood, realizing with absolute clarity that she would never change.

"You will not select the nannies. You will not dictate their upbringing. In fact, you will not have any contact with this child until you can prove, through years of sustained, documented therapy, that you are no longer a danger to the people around you."

Beatrice’s face flushed purple with rage. "You cannot keep my grandchild from me! I have rights!"

May you like

"You have no rights to my family," Julian stated coldly. "You lost those rights the day you tried to destroy my wife. Goodbye, Mother."

He turned and walked away down the fluorescent-lit hallway. Beatrice screamed insults after him, her voice shrill and desperate, but Julian didn't look back. The final chain had been permanently snapped.
