Chapter 8: The Second Line

Winter arrived, blanketing the estate gardens in a soft, pristine layer of white snow.

The mansion was warm, smelling of cedarwood and baking bread. Elena was sitting by the fireplace in the main living room, a thick wool blanket draped over her lap.

She was staring at a small, white plastic stick resting on the coffee table.

Two solid pink lines.

Her heart was hammering a frantic, beautiful rhythm against her ribs. She pressed her hands to her stomach, a sudden wave of overwhelming protective instinct washing over her.

Julian walked into the room carrying two mugs of hot cocoa. He stopped when he saw her face.

"Elena? What’s wrong? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."

Elena shook her head, a watery laugh escaping her lips. She picked up the plastic test and held it out to him.

"Not a ghost," Elena whispered. "A future."

Julian set the mugs down so quickly that hot cocoa sloshed over the rims. He stared at the two pink lines, his breath catching in his throat. He looked from the test to Elena, his eyes wide with shock and absolute, unfiltered joy.

He dropped to his knees in front of her chair, burying his face in her lap, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"Are you serious?" he choked out, his voice thick with tears.

"I'm serious," she smiled, running her fingers through his hair.

Julian looked up at her, his eyes shining. But for a brief, fleeting second, a shadow crossed his face. The inherited fear of the Vance legacy.

"I don't know how to be a father," Julian admitted, his voice trembling. "I only know what my parents showed me. I don't want to pass this darkness down."

Elena leaned forward, taking his face in her hands.

May you like

"Julian, look around you," she said fiercely. "The darkness is gone. We painted over it. We starved it out. You are not your parents. You are a man who builds sanctuaries for strangers. Imagine the sanctuary you are going to build for your own child."

The fear vanished from his eyes, replaced by a fierce, unbreakable resolve. He kissed her deeply, the warmth of the fire casting a golden glow over the family they were just beginning to build.
