Chapter 7: The Ribbon Cutting
The sky was a brilliant, cloudless blue on the day Julian’s design studio broke ground on the Eastside housing project.
It was a stark contrast to the elite, champagne-soaked galas the Vance family used to host. There were no red carpets or string quartets. There were local community leaders, construction workers in hard hats, and families who had been on housing waitlists for years.
Elena stood in the front row, wearing a simple navy trench coat, watching her husband step up to the podium.
He didn't look like the stiff, miserable heir to a corporate dynasty anymore. He looked vibrant, grounded, and incredibly alive.
"For a long time," Julian spoke into the microphone, his voice echoing across the empty dirt lot, "I believed that real estate was about acquiring land and hoarding value. I was taught that a building was just a number on a spreadsheet."
He looked out at the crowd, his eyes locking briefly with Elena’s.
"But a house is not a commodity. It is a sanctuary. It is the place where children take their first steps, where families share meals, and where people should feel absolutely safe from the storms of the world. Today, we aren't just breaking ground on fifty houses. We are laying the foundation for fifty homes."
The crowd erupted into genuine, roaring applause.
Elena felt a tear slip down her cheek. She clapped until her hands stung.
After the ceremony, as the crowds dispersed, Julian walked over to her. He didn't boast about his speech. He simply wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close.

"We did it," he whispered into her hair.
"You did it," Elena corrected gently. "I just bought you the time to figure out how."
