Chapter 8 - The Viper's Nest

|

By eight o'clock, the Whitfield mansion had transformed into a glittering, dangerous paradise. The grand ballroom was bathed in the warm light of massive crystal chandeliers. Waiters in crisp white tuxedos circulated with trays of expensive champagne, navigating through a sea of designer gowns and bespoke suits.

To the untrained eye, it was a high-society charity gala celebrating a corporate merger and a beautiful engagement.

To anyone who understood the underworld, it was a viper’s nest.

The room was packed with the most dangerous men in the country. Politicians who looked the other way, judges who manipulated dockets, and the heads of the five major syndicates on the East Coast. They had all come to witness the formal alliance between the Whitfield empire of Boston and the Rossi family of Chicago.

Emily stood near the grand staircase, looking absolutely radiant in a backless, emerald-green silk gown. She smiled flawlessly, charming the wives of the board members, playing the perfect, innocent fiancée.

Thomas stood beside her, a masterpiece of cold control in a custom black tuxedo. He played the part of the devoted groom, nodding at the congratulations, accepting the toasts, all while meticulously tracking the movement of every single armed guard in the room.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Don Rossi entered.

He was an older man with silver hair, a sharp, aristocratic nose, and eyes that held absolutely no warmth. He walked with a silver-tipped cane, flanked by his lieutenants.

Emily’s face lit up with genuine triumph as she saw her father. She glided across the marble floor, embracing him warmly.

“You look beautiful, my dear,” Don Rossi smiled, kissing her cheek. He turned his cold eyes to Thomas. “And you, my future son. Tonight, we solidify a legacy that will control everything from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic seaboard.”

“We do indeed, Don Rossi,” Thomas replied smoothly, offering a firm handshake. “A legacy built on blood.”

The older man chuckled, assuming it was a metaphorical compliment regarding their violent histories. He had no idea Thomas meant it literally.

Down in the staff quarters, Rosie paced the small floor of her room. Norine was fast asleep on the bed, exhausted from the day. Two massive, silent men in black suits stood outside her door in the hallway, exactly as Thomas had promised.

But the walls of the mansion were thin, and Rosie’s anxiety was a living, breathing thing. She couldn't sit still while the man who had protected her daughter was upstairs walking into a trap. She knew Emily was planning something tonight. She could feel it in the air, a heavy, suffocating pressure that warned of impending doom.

She made a decision. She wasn't going to be a helpless bystander.
