Chapter 11 - The Toast

|

Silas escorted Rosie out from behind the velvet curtain, positioning her safely near the edge of the ballroom where she was flanked by three heavily armed Whitfield loyalists.

At the center of the room, the string quartet abruptly stopped playing. A sharp, melodic clinking of a silver spoon against a crystal glass echoed through the massive space.

The crowd went silent, turning their attention toward the grand staircase.

Thomas Whitfield stood on the landing, looking like a dark, wrathful god. He held a crystal flute of golden champagne in his right hand. Emily stood perfectly beside him, wearing a radiant, victorious smile, holding her own glass. Don Rossi stood at the base of the stairs, surrounded by his remaining men, watching with eager, greedy anticipation.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Thomas’s deep, resonant voice carried effortlessly across the silent ballroom. “Family. Friends. And honored guests.”

He looked out over the crowd, his dark eyes scanning the room until they found Rosie standing safely by the wall. A microscopic, almost imperceptible nod passed between them.

“Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of a union,” Thomas continued, turning his gaze to Emily. She beamed up at him, entirely oblivious to the trap closing around her. “A union of two powerful families. A treaty designed to bring peace to our territories and prosperity to our businesses.”

He raised his glass slightly.

“But my father, Vincenzo Whitfield, taught me a very important lesson before he died,” Thomas said, his voice dropping an octave, turning cold and incredibly dangerous. “He taught me that peace built on a lie is just a delayed war. And a union built on murder is an execution.”

The smile on Emily’s face froze. A ripple of uneasy confusion swept through the elite guests.

Don Rossi stiffened at the base of the stairs, his hand reaching for the silver head of his cane. “Thomas, what is the meaning of this?”

“The meaning, Don Rossi,” Thomas said, taking a slow step down the stairs, ignoring Emily completely, “is that I do not drink with traitors.”

Thomas looked at the glass of reserve champagne in his hand. The poisoned glass Emily had personally prepared for him.

He didn't drink it.

Instead, he turned to Emily, holding the glass out to her.

“Drink with me, darling,” Thomas commanded softly, his eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying, absolute intensity. “Drink to our future.”

Emily’s face drained of all color. She stared at the golden liquid bubbling in the crystal flute as if it were a live grenade. Her hands began to shake violently.

“I… I already have a glass, Thomas,” she stammered, her voice pitching high with panic.

“I insist,” Thomas said, stepping closer, his imposing frame blocking her escape route up the stairs. “If our love is true, you will drink from my cup. Show our guests your devotion, Emily.”

The silence in the ballroom was deafening. Every syndicate boss, every politician, every guest was watching the bride tremble. They all knew what it meant. She wouldn't drink the wine.

“No,” Emily whispered, stepping backward, tears of pure terror welling in her eyes. “Thomas, please.”

“You won't drink it,” Thomas stated, his voice booming over the crowd now, echoing with lethal authority, “because you know it contains the same synthetic digitalis you used to murder my father.”
