Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The silence that followed was suffocating. The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the beautiful, polished fiancée to offer an explanation that could somehow diffuse the ticking time bomb in the hallway.
Emily swallowed hard. The muscles in her throat worked visibly, and the fake, radiant smile she used to disarm board members was nowhere to be found.
“I… I found it when I was moving my things into the guest suite a few months ago,” Emily stammered, her voice pitching slightly higher than usual. “I didn't know what it was. I thought it was just old tax records. I put it in the wall safe because I didn't want the cleaning staff throwing it away by accident.”
Thomas slowly turned his head to look at her. The expression in his dark eyes was terrifyingly blank. It was the look of a man evaluating a threat, calculating the precise angle required to neutralize it.
“You found my father’s personal ledger,” Thomas repeated softly, his tone completely devoid of emotion. “The ledger that went missing the night he died of sudden heart failure. The ledger the entire family turned this house upside down looking for. And you simply tucked it into a hidden wall compartment and forgot to mention it?”
“Thomas, darling, you have to believe me,” Emily pleaded, reaching out to touch his arm.
He didn't pull away, but he didn't lean into her touch either. He remained as rigid as a statue.
“And the velvet box?” Thomas asked, gesturing to the small, dark object resting beside the book. “Did you find that lying around as well?”
“That is mine!” Emily said quickly, perhaps a bit too quickly. Her hand twitched toward the compartment, but Thomas’s sheer physical presence stopped her. “It’s just family heirloom jewelry. My grandmother’s ring. I wanted to keep it secure.”
“In my father’s house. In a hidden safe you never told me you knew the code to,” Thomas stated. He reached into the dark cavity, ignoring her panicked gasp, and pulled both the ledger and the velvet box out into the light of the hallway.
He didn't open them. He held them firmly in his left hand.
He turned his attention back to Rosie, who was still clutching Norine to her chest. The fierce, terrifying mafia boss vanished for a microsecond, replaced by the man who remembered her daughter’s birthday.

“Take Norine to the kitchen, Rosie,” Thomas instructed gently. “Get her some ice cream. You have the rest of the afternoon off.”
Rosie didn't hesitate. She nodded quickly, carrying her daughter away from the toxic, suffocating atmosphere of the corridor, leaving the billionaire and his desperate fiancée alone in the shadows.
