Chapter 5 - The Snake in the House

|
The atmosphere in the mansion shifted dramatically by nightfall. To the untrained eye, it was just the chaotic, frantic energy of a house preparing for the social event of the decade. Tomorrow evening, Thomas Whitfield and Emily Rossi were scheduled to host a massive gala to formally announce their engagement to the elite families of the country.
But beneath the surface, the house was holding its breath.
Rosie remained locked in her staff quarters, exactly as Enzo had instructed. The small room felt suffocating. Norine was asleep on the narrow bed, her chest rising and falling peacefully, completely unaware that her mother was sitting in a chair by the door, wide awake, listening to every footstep in the hallway.
Around midnight, a soft, deliberate knock echoed against the wood.
Rosie jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She didn't answer.
“Rosie. It’s me.”
The voice was sweet, melodic, and terrifyingly familiar. It was Emily.
Rosie’s breath hitched. She slowly stood up, creeping toward the door, ensuring the deadbolt was fully engaged.
“I know you’re awake in there, Rosie,” Emily whispered through the crack in the doorframe. The cultured, polite tone was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, venomous hiss. “I just wanted to check on little Norine. She gave us quite a scare today, playing in the walls.”
Rosie clamped her hand over her mouth, refusing to make a sound.
“It’s a very big house,” Emily continued softly, her voice dripping with lethal intent. “It’s so easy for little girls who wander to get lost. Sometimes, they fall down the stairs. Sometimes, they play near the deep end of the pool when the guards aren't looking. Accidents happen to curious children every day, Rosie.”
Tears of pure, unadulterated terror sprang to Rosie’s eyes. This wasn't a subtle warning. It was a direct threat to her daughter’s life.
“If you speak one word to Thomas about what you saw in that wall,” Emily promised, her voice dropping into a dark, terrifying register, “I will ensure you and your bastard child leave this estate in black bags. Keep your mouth shut, do your job at the gala tomorrow, and maybe you’ll live to see next week.”
The sound of expensive high heels clicking away down the linoleum hallway signaled her departure.

Rosie collapsed to her knees against the door, shaking violently. She was a single mother from a rough neighborhood, armed only with a mop and a laundry basket. She was entirely outmatched by a mafia princess who had already murdered a billionaire patriarch.
She looked at her sleeping daughter. She knew she couldn't run, and she knew she couldn't stay silent. There was only one man in the world who could protect them from the monster roaming the halls.
