Chapter 19 - The Aftermath

|
The strike team moved efficiently, dragging a sobbing, crippled Matthias out of the ruined penthouse. The remaining bodies were cleared, the smoke was vented, and a heavy silence finally settled over the destroyed apartment.
The battle was over. The ghost of Matthias Dre was finally, permanently buried.
Silas stood in the center of the room, surrounded by rubble, shattered glass, and blood. His charcoal suit was ruined, covered in plaster dust and soot. He looked exhausted, the weight of the violent night finally showing on his hardened features.
He turned and looked at Serena.
She was still sitting on the velvet sofa, miraculously untouched by the chaos. She was holding the baby, gently rocking her, humming a soft, soothing melody that cut through the lingering smell of gunpowder in the air.
Silas slowly holstered his weapon. He walked over to the sofa and carefully knelt on the floor beside her.
“Are you hurt?” Silas asked, his voice incredibly soft, his eyes scanning her face for any sign of trauma.
“No,” Serena smiled weakly, looking down at the sleeping infant. “We’re perfect. Thanks to you.”
Silas reached out, gently tracing the outline of the baby’s tiny fist with his thumb. The sheer contrast between the violent warlord and the gentle protector was overwhelming.
“I failed you, Serena,” Silas whispered, his eyes filled with a deep, crushing guilt. “I promised I would build a fortress to keep you safe. And I let him walk right through the front door. You had to give birth in a warzone because of my arrogance.”
Serena reached out with her free hand, resting her palm against Silas’s rough, stubble-covered cheek.
“You didn't fail us, Silas,” she said firmly, forcing him to look her in the eyes. “You protected us. You stood between us and a firing squad without hesitating. You are the only reason we are alive.”
Silas closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. “I live in a dark world, Serena. I can't scrub the blood off my hands. But I swear to you, if you stay... I will spend the rest of my life making sure the darkness never touches you or this little girl.”
Serena looked at the man who owed her a life, and who had just paid that debt ten times over. She didn't care about his past. She didn't care about the syndicate. She only cared about the man kneeling in front of her.
“I’m not going anywhere, Silas,” Serena whispered.

Silas opened his eyes, a fierce, protective light burning within them. He leaned forward and gently kissed her forehead, then pressed a soft kiss to the top of the sleeping baby’s head.
“We need to leave the city,” Silas said, standing up and offering her his hand. “The penthouse is compromised. I have a private estate in the mountains. Untraceable. We leave tonight.”
